Red tides.Factors regulating growth of Heterocapsa triquetra and fate of the biomass.The dioflagellate Heterocapsa triquetra (Dinophyceae) is abundant in the phytoplankton of the Baltic Sea and it sometimes forms red tides in polluted coastal waters.Recurrent red tides have been studied in Mariehamn Västerhamn - Svibyviken area in Åland (SW Finland).During the unusually warm summer 1997 the species was abundant in June but it disappeared in mid-July.A paper on Heterocapsa was presented at the BMB 15 and ECSA 27 Symposium in Mariehamn 9-13 June 1997 (in press 1998) and a poster was presented at the VIII International Conference on Harmful Algae in Vigo, Spain 25-29 June 1997.Two students, Johanna Liljekvist and Pia Nyman participated in the investigations in 1997.Johanna Liljekvist studied the fate of the Heterocapsa biomass.A toxic bloom of Prymnesium sp.(Haptophyta) caused extensive fish mortality in the almost enclosed brackish-water inlet Vargsundet (salinity 2.2 PSU) in Åland in July 1997.Vargsundet was investigated regularly in July and August.The toxicity of water persisted until late August.A manuscript on the studies in Vargsundet has been submitted.
