In the EMU Project [Effective Mathematics Teaching] methods are developed and tried out with secondary school students to further multiple representations of mathematical knowledge and applications of mathematical knowledge in problem solving.The most effective representations, for specific mathematical concepts and themes, are searched for with respect to the acquisition of new mathematical knowledge.Some contributions are made to the development of teaching materials that will be additions to, but not replacements of, existing teaching materials.These additions are primarily directed to the teacher, and they include teacher guides and reproducible student pages.The EMU Project also takes advantage of the potential of parallel dynamic representations, which can be realized with the aid of computers.In order to support the learning of physics and realistic problem solving, methods of representing relationships between variables, in the form of graphs, formulae, etc., are investigated.The content emphasizes concepts and themes which have proved to be problem areas for mathematics teaching in Finland.
